GREEN FROG MARKET - History

Green Frog Market History & Tradition

Green Frog Market was first opened in Bakersfield in 1934 on the southeast corner of Chester and California Avenues by Charlie Everett. Charlie felt that quality and price were the most important values that he could offer his customers. Based on those principals his business grew and flourished.

In 1946 he opened his second store at Alta Vista and Bernard which by 1952 was expanded to be the first supermarket in Bakersfield. Proceeding his passing in 1988 his family chose to carry on Charlie’s’ legacy as the leading independent grocer in Bakersfield.

On April 16th 1998 Green Frog Market Country Club Plaza opened its doors for business. Just like 1934 Green Frog Market was operated with the idea that quality and price were the values that rewarded their customers. Quality and value were represented by USDA Choice and Prime meats at chain competitive pricing, locally grown grower direct farm fresh produce below chain store pricing and grocery products at or below chain store pricing. Smiths Bakeries and Green Frog Deli brought customers fresh made quality products ready to eat. Customers saw the value and the store was a hit.

Today those values still exist and have been expanded on. Green Frog features many new local items throughout the store that are unique to Bakersfield. A coffee roaster and coffee bar were added to complete the fresh shopping experience supplied by bakery and deli, and in the tradition of the produce department many of the coffee beans that are fresh roasted on the premises are supplied fresh from the grower. Safe 1 Credit Union now serves customers from its new branch inside the store. Besides the amenities Green Frog offers customers, weekly ads promote special pricing, and periodic “celebrations” keep giving Green Frog customers a reason to keep coming back. Just like Charlie, his family continues to give quality and value to the customers and keep Green Frog Market “Always a leap ahead”.
